There will be two meetings this week to discuss new transit and transportation related TIF districts.  The House Intergovernmental Committee will consider HB 5173, which creates TIF districts surrounding transit stops; a workgroup of the House Transportation Committee will continue discussions on HB 4967, which allows creation of TIF districts surround transportation systems. The Counties, Community Colleges and Libraries testified at the last workgroup and are expected to testify in committee this week about their problems with TIF districts and they are expected to ask for opt-outs.  The League will have several members at both meetings from around the state to explain the economic development benefits from TIF districts, the potential job creation from transit-oriented development, and counter the arguments of the counties, libraries, and community colleges.  Also expected to testify against opt-outs are members of the business and environmental communities.  If you would like to provide comment on these issues, please contact Andy Schor on League staff and he will provide to you the names and email address of the appropriate legisaltors.
