This morning I had a meeting about potential legislation that would open the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). The Press Association has concerns that FOIA is too costly and not uniform. While I understand the concerns of the press, we (myself along with other local government and school lobbyists) impressed upon the group that our members often get burdensome and costly FOIA requests, and we need to keep that in mind. One issue we were all able to agree upon is the issue of judicial discretion. Our communities have been dealing with the issue of people going around FOIA and having a friend or someone else FOIA documents used in discovery. The City of Howell was successful in getting a protective order to prevent this behavior. What are your thoughts on opening FOIA?
