Considering the payroll of the Detroit Tigers, it would be a logical assumption that "TIGER Grants" are something they're doing for baseball fans this year.  No, that's not the case ... they're better!  "TIGER Grants" stand for Transportation Investments Generating Economic Recovery – and the United States Department of Transportation has announced that these grants are available starting today!

Funds under this program will be awarded to State and Local governments who have any of the following projects:

  • Highway or bridge projects
  • Public transportation projects
  • Passenger and freight rail transportation projects
  • Port infrastructure investments, including projects that connect ports to other modes of transportation and improve the efficiency of freight movement.

These grants may be no less than $20 million and no great than $300 million.  However, the USDOT has the ability to waive this $20 million requirement for smaller cities and they are urging all communities to apply for these grants.

The deadline for applications is September 15, 2009.  More information can be found TIGER FACT SHEET (2).pdf (26.51 kb) or by emailing recovery.grantee@dot.gov.
