The University of Michigan Center for Local, Urban and State Policy has released findings from its latest survey of local government officials. This survey asked local leaders about their jurisdictions pay and benefit levels and was performed during the Spring of 2010. The information could provide quite timely given the current debate over public sector compensation.
Among the reports findings, only 6% of Michigan's local officials said their jurisdictions employees are overpaid. On the other hand, among jurisdictions that provide fringe benefits to their employees, 27% of local leaders think the benefits are too generous, and 38% think their employees do not pay enough toward their own health care benefits.
The Michigan Public Policy Survey is conducted by the CLOSUP at UM in partnership with the League, Michigan Association of Counties and MIchigan Townships Association. The survey takes place twice each year and investigates local officials opinions and perspectives on a variety of public policy issues.
