Bills to increase the state's gas and diesel taxes to .27 cents per gallon were submitted in the Michigan House of Representatives today.  Representatives Richard Ball and Pamela Byrnes sponsored a three bill package that will be officially introduced during House session tomorrow.  The House Bills will increase the state gas tax by 4 cents in 2010 and another 4 cents in 2013, alongside an increase in the diesel tax of 6 cents in 2010 and 6 cents in 2013, arriving at parity between the two taxes at that time.  The third bill provides for the distribution of the new revenue acknowledging the legislators' desire to ensure that this new money be dedicated solely to roads and transit.  These are the first bills introduced this session aligned with the revenue recommendations from the Transportation Funding Task Force report (TF2).  No word yet on when the committee will begin deliberations on the bill.  Chris Hackbarth works for the Michigan Municipal League handling transportation issues.  He can be reached at 517-908-0303 or email at chackbarth@mml.org.
