Shared service experiences

As you know, Governor Snyder has been talking about the importance for local government efficiency and the need for municipalities to engage in more shared services. At a recent League Board meeting, the Governor said that he would be interested in hearing what locals are already doing.

We know that local officials across the state have found many ways to provide services more effeciently and/or collaborate with neighboring municipalities to reduce costs. It is critical that we share our experiences.

The League is now compiling such information for delivery to the Governor's office. Please use this form to describe your experiences. It is important that you do this as soon as possible. If you have any questions, contact Arnold Weinfeld at the League.

As Chief of Police the City of Hastings began sharing emergancy dispatch services in the late eighties, involving our employees actually working off-site at the Sheriff's Dept. while dispatching all emergency units with the exception of the State police. In 1991 this evolved into a full-blown county-wide Central Dispatch concept, including the State Police, all other police, fire, and all EMS units. Our Central Dispatch has served us well for over twenty years providing cost savings for all departments and agencies involved.

The City of Hastings collaborates with our local Hastings School District, in the hiring process, training, and supervision of adult school-crossing guards. This joint venture allows the Police Department to hire the crossing guards, train them including re-training each year, and to supervise them as necessary. Our School District performs all pay and benifits functions as necessary. The City of Hastings and the Hastings Area School District each pay 50% of the necessary expenses for retaining this important service.
