Today, the Senate General Government subcommittee on Appropriations took testimony on revenue sharing for FY 2010-11, which passed the House with a 1% increase to the combined total of Constitutional and Statutory for the current fiscal year. Jeff Jenks, Mayor Pro Tem of Huntington Woods and current MML President, and Mayor Karen Majewski of Hamtramck and MML Trustee testified with staff regarding the critical nature of the funding. They explained the need for the modest increase based on property tax reductions, the draconian revenue sharing cuts in the past decade, and the other negative impacts from the down economy. Senator Pappageorge (R-Troy), who chairs the committee, said he believed all Senators recognized how important this was and indicated he would do his best to assist local communities. Senator Deb Cherry (D-Burton) stated she would vote to support the 1% increase and in fact, wanted the number to be higher. The committee will be taking testimony on other parts of the budget over the next several weeks and is expected to vote out their recommendations on Thursday, May 13th.
