The House and Senate each passed versions of new legislation that will allow a regional convention and tourism bureau to be created for the Saginaw/Bay/Midland region. The bureau would be allowed to assess up to a 5 percent tax on hotels and motels within the district, an increase from the current 2 percent cap, as a way to boost revenues. The bills are SB 1515 (Sen. Stamas) and HB 6206 (Rep. Mayes).  The cities of Saginaw, Bay City, and Midland expressed support for these bills, and League staff expressed support in committee and when the bills were considered in each chamber.
