Today, Grand Rapids Mayor
George Heartwell and Lansing Mayor Virg Benero testified that there's a
pressing need at the local level for adequate transportation funding. Both mayors touched on the fact that Act 51
revenues are down close to 12% since 2001 and soon, neither city will be able
to provide matching dollars for federal dollars, nor will they be able to
support their transportation networks with general fund dollars (thanks to
those nasty revenue sharing hits we keep taking).
Coming out of the meeting,
many folks congratulated the Mayors for their words and gave great props to the
League for bringing them in. It really
helps to have the support of MML members in Lansing to help put a face on the problem we’re
facing with our transportation issues.
And we need you to keep
helping us push the message. I ask once
