A series of public forums to develop a vision for passenger and freight rail systems in Michigan recently kicked off in Royal Oak.  In an effort to assist the Michigan Department of Transportation in developing a state rail plan, as required by the federal Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act of 2008, a number of statewide organizations have teamed up to engage the public in this discussion at locations around the state.  In addition to the Royal Oak event on June 14th, upcoming forums are scheduled in East Lansing on July 8th, Battle Creek on July 15th and Traverse City on July 22nd.  Continuing through the end of the year, the Michigan By Rail effort expects to visit an additional 10 communities, including places like New Buffalo, Muskegon, Jackson and Kalamazoo.  These events will offer an opportunity for the public to get an overview of the state's existing rail system, discuss financing of rail projects and service, and provide input on the statewide vision for freight, passenger and commuter rail in Michigan.  Local officials and members of the public are encouraged to attend and share their thoughts on this important issue.
