The League held a press conference this morning to highlight the importance of reforming PA 312 as a way to save public safety jobs.
HB 5325 introduced by
Rep. Haveman makes common sense reforms to PA 312 including adding a definition of ability to pay and requiring arbitrators to focus on internal comparables. Speakers at the event included MML Executive Director and CEO Dan Gilmartin, Rep. Haveman, MML President Jeff Jenks and Chief George Basar, Chief of Police in the City of Howell representing the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. Also in attendance were MML Board Members Dale Kerbyson (Lapeer City Manager) and Lynn Markland (Fenton City Manager) as well as Sarah Hubbard, Vice President of Government Relations for the Detroit Regional Chamber of Commerce. In these economic times failure to amend PA 312 means fewer public safety officers on the street. Amending this law is crucial to protecting public safety!
