Last month, the Senate Finance Committee had SB 34, which eliminates the personal property tax, on the agenda for discussions during committee. The League testified in opposition to such a bill without guaranteed replacement for communities, to ensure their fiscal health. Many members also came and testified about the impact that bill would have without a discussion of new revenues for local governments. The hearings involved many tax issues, ranging from the elimination of the MBT to adiscussion on the Fair Tax last week. This week, the Senate Finance committee has posted their agenda to include bills dealing with sales and use tax issues. So, SB 34 is not listed for additional discussion. We do expect, however, the issues will come back soon. And, we are hopeful more members will come and testify as those meeting take place.
