The Senate this week passed four of the five bills in the Next Michigan package (also called the Aerotropolis legislation).  The legislation creates the Next Michigan Act which allows five regions (counties and communities) to join together in an interlocal agreement that allows them to use core community economic development tools to attract businesses that are multi-modal.  The tools include renaissance zones, personal property tax abatements, IFT’s, and LDFA’s.

All the bills except the Renaissance Zone bill passed Senate committee and the full Senate.  The House has already passed the same bills, so now each chamber has bills in the other chamber awaiting consideration. The Senate plans to work on the House version of the Renaissance Zone bill over the next few weeks. If an acceptable version can be crafted, the Senate will finalize the renaissance zone bill and the entire package is expected to go to the Governor when session ends during the week of November 30th  through December 2nd.
