Members in the House and Senate have introduced legislation to create the framework for a Nationwide Public Safety Broadband Network that would significantly strengthen the communications capabilities of America’s first responders.
S. 28, introduced by Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-West Virginia) would provide first responders and public safety officials with both additional wireless spectrum and funding resources to construct a nationwide network. H.R. 607, introduced by Rep. Peter King (R-NY), would reallocate the D Block communications spectrum to public safety and provide a means to fund the network’s construction.
These bills differ greatly from the preference of the telecommunications industry which would like to see the specific "D block" radio spectrum auctioned off to the highest bidder. Local officials should be aware that a industry group calling itself, "Connect Public Safety Now" has been approaching communities seeking support.
Their approach is contrary to a recent report which found that assigning the D Block spectrum to public safety, as opposed to subjecting it to a commercial auction, provides the nation with at least $3.4 billion more in social benefit.
The League will work with our comgressional delegation and national partners in Washington in support of a nationwide public safety communications network.
