Yesterday, the Michigan House of Representatives passed HB 4801, which allows communities to have rental inspection programs for mobile homes.  The program must be focused on safety and can focus on the following areas: furnace, water heater, electrical wiring, proper sanitation and plumbing, ventilation, heating equipment, and structural integrity.  Currently, any community ordinance regulating mobile home rentals has to be approved by the state Mobile Home Commission (which has mobile home industry members serving on it).  Several communities have tried this, but their ordinances have been rejected by the Commission.  This legislation will now allow communities to create these ordinances and inspect these properties to ensure the safety of the residents. The bill passed 100-7, and now goes to the Senate for consideration.  Please contact your state senator and ask him/her to support this bill.
