Michigan has received funding from the federal government as part of investments in 94 broadband projects in 37 states funded through the Recovery Act.
$5.6 million was awarded to Bloomingdale Communications to offer broadband service in Southwest Michigan; Michigan State University received $6 million to establish and upgrade 200 public computer centers in south-central Michigan and MERIT was awarded $69.6 million to offer broadband service in the Upper Peninsula, northern Lower Peninsulal with additional connections to research and educational networks in Wisconsin and Minnesota
The total investment of $1.8 billion, is part of a nearly $7 billion Recovery Act initiative. The awards are part of a program administered by the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) and the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) to expand broadband access and adoption across the country.
