On Monday October 31, the Michigan Environmental Council hosted Michigan Rail Summit 2011 in Lansing. The League was one of the sponsors of the summit where local, state and national experts explored how rail development affects Michigan businesses and the environment and looked at the vital role that railroad transportation will play in the 21st century economy. The summit was headed by Governor Rick Snyder and also included John Porcari of the U.S. Department of Transportation: the Federal Railroad Administration Administrator Joseph C. Szabo: Michigan Department of Transportation Director Kirk Steudle: CEO of the Michigan Chamber of Commerce Rich Studley: Michigan Environmental Council President Chris Kolb: Michigan Municipal League CEO Dan Gilmartin, State Senate Minority Leader Gretchen Whitmer, Senator John Proos, and Representative Wayne Schmidt.
