In 2005 Congress passed legislation banning mercury vapor streetlights. In the last few years energy companies have had enough inventory to continue to replace mercury vapor lights; however, that inventory is declining. As a result other types of lighting need to be considered.
The League has met with Consumers Energy to discuss this issue and has also discussed this with outside council.
Below you will find two documents attached - one is a statement by Consumers Energy regarding the replacement of mercury vapor lights. The other is ap iece prepared by Rick Coy, an attorney at Clark Hill in Lansing, that discusses a community's options regarding refunds for more energy efficient streetlights.
Consumers is interested in working with communities as this process moves forward. For more information you can contact us or the street light department at Consumers: street_lighting@cmsenergy.com
