Today I met with the legislative director for the
Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). We went through a variety of issues. One important issue we covered was how the MEDC can be involved in small projects in communities. They do a good job of attracting and funding and incenting big projects (like 500 jobs), but many communities want to attract smaller businesses (think jobs in 2s and 3s) and cannot get help from the MEDC. Well...they apparently do have a program that can help. It is called the
Capital Access Program. Apparently, they have some money and have partnered with banks to issue loans for small businesses. This program had previously been de-funded, but now has money it it from the 21st Century Fund.
