With debate continuing in Congress on the stimulus package and groups such as the League gathering and publicizing information about infrastructure projects in local communities, one has to wonder... why hasn't our own Michigan Department of Transportation put forth their list? Is it a sign that their list might receive criticism for road projects that could exacerbate economic, energy and climate problems rather than solving them? A
recent report provides details on some of those states that have released their plans. Of the 19 state DOT stimulus requests that have been made public, over half have asked that 80 percent of the funding - or more - go to roads, with most of that money being devoted to new road construction. Now is not the time to waste taxpayer dollars on new roads to nowhere - stimulus funds should be used to "fix-it-first" and invest in public transportation. What say you, MDOT?
