$17.4 million in grants has been awarded to 125 Michigan communities to help support local energy efficiency projects. The monies were awarded by the Michigan Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth as part of the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program funded through the Recovery Act. The grants will support energy efficiency measures such as replacing high-energy systems in municipal buildings and street lighting, creating or expanding community recycling programs, and installing small-scale renewable energy generating systems. At a time when municipalites are finding it hard to fund capital improvements, these grants will allow them to jump start some efforts and at the same time realize operational savings. Arnold Weinfeld is Director of Strategic Initiatives and Federal Affairs for the Michigan Municipal League. He can be reached at 517-908-0304 or by e-mail.
