In the midst of Congress and the President trying to find common ground for the 2011 budget, local officials from across Michigan and League staff will be headed to Washington, D.C. this week to attend the National League of Cities annual congressional conference.
Board President Carol Shafto, Vice-President Karen Majewski and trustee Susan Rowe will join former board officials and others from across the state as well as League CEO Dan Gilmartin, myself, State Affairs Director Summer Minnick and Legislative Associate Samantha Harkins to work the halls of Congress on issues of importance to our members.
We will be meeting with members of the Michigan Congressional delegation and will hear from federal officials as part of the conference. Given that the federal budget debate for 2011 is still raging, it should be a very interesting trip.
This is why it remains vital for you to continue communicating with your congressional representative on the importance of federal funds for community programs like CBDG, USDA rural development, clean water revolving funds, etc. All are in deep jeopardy as Congress looks to make deep cuts this year and into the future to address the growing budget deficit.
