Under current law, a public officer or public employee of a municipality is exempt from the Incompatibility of Offices Act if they also serve on a TIFA board, DDA, LDFA, or Brownfield Board.  The Senate today passed legislation (SB 284) sponsored by Sen. Gerald Van Woerkom (R-Muskegon) to expand these exemptions to also include the following boards: Neighborhood Improvement Authorities, Corridor Improvement Authorities, Water Resource Improvement Authorities, Historical Neighborhood Tax Authorities. Principal Shopping Districts, Business Improvement Zones, Metropolitan Districts, and Land Banks.  The League supported this legislation because it ensures that there is knowledgeable and appropriate representation on these Boards which create jobs and economic development in communities.
