The Michigan Municipal League's Summer Minnick is in a recent Gongwer article about how local governments rely just as much on the Michigan Legislature being timely with their budget as schools do. There was a lot written recently about how lawmakers passed a K-12 budget by a self-imposed July 1 deadline.

Here is the part of the Gongwer article related to Minnick: "While lawmakers left town over a month ago, patting themselves on the back for completing the K-12 budget on time, Summer Minnick with the Michigan Municipal League said what got lost in the stories of that accomplishment was that local governments rely just as much on the Legislature being as timely with their budget."

"... Minnick, director of state affairs for MML, said some of the anxiety among members this year has been uncertainty surrounding how much money Michigan will get from the federal government and how that impacts other parts of the budget. Congress passed Medicaid and education funding on Tuesday (see related story), so state officials are getting a clearer picture.

"Asked whether the delay in funding approval is spurring some of their members to ask that revenue sharing be part of a separate budget like K-12, Ms. Minnick and (David Bertram, legislative liaison for the Michigan Townships Association,) said that hasn't been the case.

" 'Certainly we'd like to keep the pressure up on leadership to get that (budget) done,' Ms. Minnick said."

Well said Summer!
