The House Intergovernmental Committee today began testimony regarding transit-oriented development (TOD). They began to take up testimony on several bills that add TOD language to several ecnomomic development statutes and allow communities to use these economic development tools for transit oriented development.
I testified in support of the bills and about the importance of transit and its economic benefits. I mentioned how other communities and states have used this to prosper, and how Michigan needs to do the same. Young people want to go where there is transit, as do seniors, and we have studies proving this.
The bills are expected to be voted on soon and sent to the Senate, where they are expected to pass. The Senate also has several bills which are expected to pass and become law.
