Two bills were introduced yesterday to assist communities with economic development at the request of the Michigan Municipal League and its members.  House Majority Floor Leader Kathy Angerer (D-Dundee) introduced HB 5327, which ensures that businesses can use in-state equipment when they are granted a personal property tax abatement.  Current law requires that equipment be “new to the state” which means that businesses would have to purchase from out of state rather than being able to purchase equipment from other businesses which may go out of business.  Rep. Sharon Tyler (R-Niles) introduced HB 5285, which allows communities to offer commercial rehabilitation tax incentives to owners of vacant property that was previously used as commercial property.  This will assist League communities with vacant property (as a result of a fire, demolition, etc) to offer this tool and attract jobs.  The League thanks Reps. Angerer and Tyler and looks forward to working on these bills.
