Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero says he'll stand with League to urge no revenue sharing cuts

Today, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero was asked about working with newly elected Governor Rick Snyder on issues. The Mayor references the League and revenue sharing right away in his comments. According to the January 4 edition of MIRS, he said he "stands ready to help if he is asked. He warned, however, that if Snyder is tempted, like other governors, to go after what remains of revenue sharing to the cities, then 'I will be standing with the Michigan Municipal League' to fight that. "

We appreciate all the work that MML is doing on local government funding and other fronts. However, when it comes to State Shared Revenue, the fact is that the current statutory formula is the ONLY thing that the Governor and Legislature control. That formula is obsolete and creates perverse disparities. The City of Novi (pop. 53,000 and 32 square miles) receives about $16,000 in Statutory State Shared Revenue. MML has been good about making the difference between Statutory and the protected Constitutional clear as that is the only part that should be debated and recognized for how it is really not working.
