This morning the House Ethics and Elections committee considered a package of bills that would eliminate city and township boards of canvassers and transfer this responsibility to the county. Several city and county clerks testified in support of this measure considering it more efficient.
The Michigan Association of Municipal Clerks has not taken this measure to its membership yet but indicated that many members appear supportive.
The committee also heard testimony on HB 6030, a bill that would amend Michigan Election Law so an absent voter counting board would not be treated as a separate precinct but rather the results of the tabulated ballots from the counting board would be combined with the results of the coordinating precinct. Again, several clerks testified in support of this as a cost saving measure.
No vote was taken on the bills as the legislators requested to hear from the City of Detroit and Wayne County about the impact of the legislation.
