The House of Representatives yesterday passed HB 6044, which will extend the sunset on the 20% Michigan Business Tax (MBT) credit that businesses can receive Brownfield projects in urban areas.  This credit has created a large number of jobs and private investments in urban areas.  Current law has the 20% credit sunset (expire) at the end of 2010. This bill will extend that to December 31, 2014.

Please thank Representative Ed Clemente, sponsor of the bill, for introducing this and moving it quickly. During the committee process, an amendment was added to prevent Brownfield credits from being granted to those who commit fraud.  The bill was also amended on the House floor to make a technical change.  It then passed the House on a 99-6 vote.

The Michigan Municipal League worked with Rep. Clemente to have this bill introduced and supported it bill in committee.  League staff will request that the legislation be taken up quickly by the Senate to ensure that communities can continue to work with businesses to attract jobs and private investment by utilizing this tool.
