The House Commerce Committee last week passed the latest
version of the Hire Michigan First bills.
These bills will
require state and local governments to use companies who hire MichiganMichigan workers. It also took up a House
substitute for SB 295 which requires a good faith effort to give obsolete
property rehabilitation act (OPRA) abatements to companies with Michigan
employees, and a new House substitute for HB 4093 which requires a good faith
effort when giving PA 198 industrial facilities abatements to companies. At the request of the League, language was
changed so that businesses deal directly with the state for PA 198 and OPRA
abatements. Thanks to Rep. Fred Miller
(D-Mt. Clemens) who is championing the bills and agreed to reinsert the
language friendly to communities. The
bills are expected to see action on the House floor soon, and negotiations will
continue between the House and Senate on language for the final versions. employees first when they offer tax
