The Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant program (EECBG) was enacted as part of the Energy Act of 2007 but remained unfunded until passage of the Recovery Act.  Since that time, communities across Michigan have received funds from the program for projects like LED street lighting, upgrading energy systems and car fleets and creating more energy efficient public buildings. And, through the League's "Green Communities Challenge" program, communities are acquiring the tools they need for short and long-term actions.

The problem of course is that when the Recovery Act funding ends, so will the program.  Now, as that money runs out, a push is on to ensure the President and Congress continue funding of the program.

The federal governments 2010 budget will not be finalized until after the election, so local officials have a perfect opportunity during the campaign season to urge those running for Congress to maintain funding for one of the few ARRA programs that actually sent money directly to local communities.  The projects being done through the EECBG program will help local officials save green by being green...an important asset of vibrant 21st century communties.

So join the campaign to save the EECBG program and send a letter to the President, urging him to continue funding.  Use that letter or create your own and be sure that if you have received funding to let the President and your congressional candidates know of the benefits of the program.
