More than 60 people from across Michigan have gathered today for the first in a series of three League sponsored workshops on form-based codes. An alternative to conventinal zoning, form-based codes emphasize building form over land use with an emphasis on the streetscape and public realm. The workshops are being conducted by the nationally recognized Form Based Codes Institute. Those attending include 41 local planners and officials from 27 communities and 20 planning consultants from 15 firms. There is even someone here from Ohio! MML Board President Robin Beltramini welcomed the group to our Capital Office facility and noted that form-based codes can be a useful tool in the community toolbox as we strive to make our communities special and unique in the 21st century. And with the number and mix of people here, I am hopeful that the information they acquire over the next two days will be useful to them in creating downtowns and neighborhoods that are active, vibrant and welcoming to all.
