While the health care debate may be grabbing all the attention, Congress has also had to finish up work on the 2010 budget. That occurred this past weekend and in typical DC fashion, it was not without its partisan rancor. In order to do it, the Democratic controlled Congress had to combine six of the 12 annual spending bills into one package. The $1.1 trillion package provides federal funding for D.C., the Transportation, Housing and Urban Development bill; the Commerce-Justice-State bill; the Labor-HHS-Education bill; the military construction-Veterans Affairs bill; and the State-foreign operations bill. The bill also includes 5,000 earmarks worth $3.9 billion of which $197 million is for 150 projects throughout Michigan. once again proving that "one person's pork is another's worthwhile project", or something like that.
