The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has announced it is accepting applications for the Early Retiree Reinsurance Program. A product of the national health care act, $5 billion has been set aside for the program, designed to reimburse local governments, and other employers, for medical claims for retirees age 55 and older who are not eligible for Medicare.
Under the program, reimbursements will be available for 80 percent of medical claims costs for health benefits between $15,000 and $80,000.
A fact sheet is available providing a overview of the program. A application FAQ is also available as are application instructions and the application itself. You can also view a complete description of the program including the rules and regulations.
Once the funds are committed, no more applications will be accepted. As the program is expected to be very popular, employers are being encouraged to submit their applications as soon as possible to ensure they're included in the program.
