You may have been hearing Governor Granholm speak out the past few weeks on the need for Congress to pass an extension of medicaid funding assistance for states, otherwise known as FMAP. The Governor's office reports that, under the current scaled-back version now before Congress, Michigan would get about half of the $560 million.
Without such funding, the Governor has made clear that additional state budget cuts will be necessary and while news reports a couple of weeks ago about revenue sharing being eliminated were false, one might expect that if the feds don't come through, any number of state programs will take a hit.
It is important that Congress pass the FMAP rate extension prior to their August recess. The League has signed on to a letter with several other groups asking that the rate extension be adopted. Please contact your congressional representative and ask them to support as well.
