In what could be a "stimulus" for local governments, Congressman George Miller of California has introduced legislation, HR 4812, that would provide $75 billion for local government jobs.

Dubbed "The Local Jobs for America Act", the funds could be used for compensating full-time, full-year positions.  Funds could be used to expand existing services or restore services cut in the past five years and up to 50 percent of the funds could be used to retain employees that might otherwise have to be let go. The positions would be federally funded for two years.

The Recovery Act has sent nearly a trillion dollars to a number of programs in order to create jobs. Given property tax and state funding losses, its about time Congress sent funding to locals so they can begin to reinvest in their communities.

Below is a fact sheet on the bill as well as a suggested resolution and letter of support.  Congress will be on break for the next two weeks.  During that time local officials should contact their representative as well as Senators Levin and Stabenow to ask for their co-sponsorship and support of the legislation.
