Bi-partisan legislation has been introduced in Congress that would require new street and transportation projects underrtaken by state DOT's and metropolitan planning organizations (MPO) be designed with "pederstrian, bicyclists, public transit users, children, older individuals, individuals with disabilities, motorists, and freight vehicles".

The "Safe and Complete Streets Act of 2011", H.R. 1780 was introduced by Representative Doris Matsui (D-CA), and Steve LaTourette (R-OH). The legislation would require that states and MPO's adhere to a Complete Streets policy for all new federally funded projects. Existing roads or projects for which planning is well underway, would not be affected by the new standards.

Michigan is a leader in Complete Streets as we have more communities than any other state with such resolutions or ordinances. Local officials with Complete Streets policies are encouraged to write their member of Congress (see suggested letter below) and ask them to sign on to the legislation.

The League firmly believes in creating streets that are meant for all users as part of creating vibrant 21st century communities.
