This afternoon the House labor Committee considered HB 6154, a bill that creates a new act to subject county corrections officers to binding arbitration. Corrections officers are not covered under current law as the result of a 1987 court opinion.
The League opposed this legislation along with the Michigan Association of Counties and the Michigan Townships Association.
Unfortunately this legislation still does not require an arbitrator to consider the community's ability to pay as the top factor in any decision. Without these amendments to any expansion (as well as PA 312), we are fundamentally opposed.
The committee did not vote on the legislation.
