Not unexpectedly, the Congressional Supercommittee formed to tackle the nation's budget deficit is failing to reach agreement.  This means that $1.5 trillion in cuts will automatically kick in for the 2013 fiscal year.

You read correctly, the 2013 fiscal year.  Congress is actually wrapping up work on the 2012 budget which means that in spite of the Supercommittee failings, it is almost a certainty that the debate over the budget deficit will go on through the 2012 election.

The League will continue to work with the Michigan Congressional delegation and our national partners to seek a balanced and fair arrangement on deficit reduction.  We also encourage local officials to pass a resolution and speak to your own member of Congress on the issue as well.

This issue will be with us for a while, let's make sure Congress understands the importance of the various federal programs that enhance quality of life in our communities.
