The second full day of meetings here in DC during the NLC conference started early with an update from federal relations staff. That was followed by a general session featuring the new directors of HUD and DOT or "Secretary" as they're called here in Washington With meetings on Capitol Hill, I was only able to hear from HUD Secretary Shaun Donovan but what I heard I liked. Secretary Donovan talked about re-creating HUD by breaking down agency barriers and forming broad partnerships. He's going to create a new Office of Sustainability linking issues such as zoning, transportation oriented development and energy-efficiency housing and will be looking to local officials for support and engagement. Then it was back to meetings with the congressional delegation. A full slate of morning and afternoon meetings found League staff and members visiting with our congressional delegation, including a group meeting with Senators Levin and Stabenow. Our discussions were engaging as there appeared to be a good understanding of our issues and willingness to be of assistance. I have to say that in the time I've been doing such meetings, I think these were among the best and was very pleased at the reception we received. In the span of two days, we managed to meet with every Michigan member or their staff. Before heading home tomorrow, I'll meet with the Vice-President's Office on Intergovernmental Affairs as they host a conference with federal agency officials on implementation of stimulus programs. Look for a full report later.
