Having spent a few days this week in our nation's capital, I can tell you that the atmosphere in Congress was as gloomy as the weather. Trying to talk to members the same week that the most controversial issue in many a year is coming to a head does not make for the most opportune of circumstances. Of course, if it wasn't health care giving people a headache, it would be something else.
So, a few of us MML'ers and about 30 local officials from across the state made our way to DC to hear the latest in federal issues from speakers at the National League of Cities conference and to make the rounds at the offices of the Michigan Congressional delegation. And despite the gloominess, we were treated well at meetings with our members including a joint meeting for all Michigan attendees hosted by Senators Levin and Stabenow.
We heard of one new initiative in the House, H.R. 4812, that would, if passed, actually send some stimulus dollars directly to local governments. On the transportation side, it looks like a extension to the end of the year of the current funding act is now on its way to the President as folks figure out how to come up with a new funding bill over the course of the year.
Look for more information in separate blog posts over the next couple of days as I'll discuss these and other news of interest to local communities in more detail
