As noted in a previous post, legislative appropriations subcommittees have ignored Governor's Snyder's request and cut funding for public transit. The House subcommittee also stripped language providing incentives for those communities that adopt Complete Streets Policies. This, even though Michigan has more communities with Complete Streets policies or ordinances (40) than any other state.
As local officials look to create vibrant communities that provide people with options for getting around, it is important that legislators know that such programs are vital. The League is working with many groups across the state, including the League of Michigan Bicyclists which has developed a action alert for contacting legislators.
The League strongly believes that policymakers need to provide local officials and communities with all the tools necessary to become vibrant, 21st Century places that will attract and retain jobs and residents. Transportation options are a key element. Please contact your legislator today!
