The Senate Transportation committee is scheduled to meet Tuesday on Senate Bills
862 and
863. These bills would increase the state's diesel tax by .04 cents, raising it to the same level as the state's gas tax, at .19 cents per gallon. The revenue from this increase (estimated between $30 and $40 million) would be earmaked for bridge repairs throughout the state. A substitute version is expected to be debated within the committee that would divide the proceeds of the increase between state bridges and the local bridge fund. This action is viewed as the first step in shaking loose the remaining Transportation Funding Task Force revenue recommendations. Check back for more information on the bills following the committee meeting.
