Bright and early this morning I attended a meeting hosted by the Center for Michigan on corrections reforms. The coalition has been meeting since the spring, and the League has voice concerns about discussing corrections reform without including law enforcement. Today's meeting was attended by George Basar, Howell Police Chief and immediate past president of the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police. Cheif Basar indicated to the group that it must consider how corrections reform impacts communities or the costs merely shift to the local level. He also indicated that reforming PA 312 is a key component to lowering costs at the local level.
