SB 618, which is known primariuly for it's main purpose - to uncap the number of charter schools - also has a provision that impacts local governments. In th ebill, property that is used for a charter school is exempt from property taxes. This is not for charter school owned buildings, but the owner of any building which is used for charter schools get tax free status. The League has been working to get this provision stripped in the House Education Committee. We do have legislators supporting an amendment to strip that provision out, and we are waiting to see when the bill will come up in committee after the legislative break.
