The House Intergovernmental Committee passed two bills this week dealing with annexation and detachment.  HB 6071 and HB 6072 would prohibit cities or villages from annexing property from any charter township of 20,000 residents or more.  They would  also prevent those 37 charter townships from detaching property.  The bills were in response to developers putting trailers on empty properties in some charter townships then trying to annex the land to the adjacent city. The committee spent time discussing if this would block friendly consolidations, but the sponsors said that it would not.  The League did not take a position on these bills yet and will be working with the bills sponsors moving forward.
