Often before the legislature goes on a break of any type (spring break is the next two weeks) there's an attempt to get as much accomplished in that final day as possible. Today is certainly one of those days. Unfortunately HB 4473 (cancer presumption) was added to today's to do list in the House and passed 96-14.  The good news is that this version is much better than last year's. An amendment was offered clarifying that it only applies to active firefighters, and one must not have smoked for 10 years before filing a claim (it was only 5 years as introduced.) That being said we are still looking at significant costs for communities if this bill would become law. It's important to contact your Senator and let them know that passing this bill is an unfunded mandate. Communities are required to carry workers compensation insurance, and increasing premiums 10-25% is devastating in this economic climate. Contact your Senator today!!
