Amtrak's Blue Water rail line celebrated its 35th anniversary today with special events at each of its stops between Port Huron and Chicago. At the East Lansing stop, Mayor Vic Loomis, Lt. Governor John Cherry, and MSU President LouAnna Simon spoke about the history of the line in East Lansing and the importance of this service moving forward, especially in light of the new Rare Isotope Accelerator project coming to the university. The public and media were invited to attend the event and were treated to refreshments and free tickets were given away. Amtrak is offering 35% off tickets on the line from October 19-22. The Blue Water train made its first trip on Sept. 13, 1974. During fiscal year 2009, 132,851 people rode the Blue Water line, according to MDOT.
